Welcome to CISG Canada

Welcome to the Home Page of CISG Canada, the Canadian website for the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (1980) (“CISG”), hosted by Osgoode Hall Law School, York University. The CISG is an attempt to create a uniform international sales law by regulating the rights and obligations of buyers and sellers in international transactions for the sale of goods. test CISG Canada aims to assist users with the latest information on Canadian sources of law and other materials regarding developments on the CISG.

The CISG was implemented in Canada on May 1, 1992 and has also been legislated into law by all the provinces and territories. For the last decade the CISG has been a relatively obscure law, even among the most experienced international trade professionals. However, knowledge of the CISG is essential for any Canadian party that commercially buys or sells goods abroad. The CISG has been accepted by many of Canada’s major trading partners, including the USA. In fact, the CISG is used by countries that account for about two-thirds of all world trade. In the European Community the CISG has become the de facto sales law of the region. In numerous parts of the world, the rise in case law indicates that the CISG is becoming much more established, and will increase in importance as international trade continues to grow.

This website intends to help the academic, legal, and business communities gain a better understanding on the function and implications of the CISG for Canadian exporters and importers. It provides references to Canadian court cases on the CISG and written materials of relevance to Canada. It also lists other references available on the CISG in Canada and elsewhere. This website also forms part of the worldwide Autonomous Network of CISG Websites.  The Founder and Editor of CISG Canada is Peter Mazzacano.  Research and editorial assistance is provided by Jillian Carrington, Osgoode J.D. candidate, 2011.
