CLASP understands justice not only through the lens of legal representation, but also sees justice as extending into and from the community. CLASP works directly with grassroots community groups broadly facilitating greater community engagement and social justice in the Jane-Finch area. CLASP provides support at community meetings, facilitates discussions and Public Legal Education in the community, encourages involvement of the legal community and trains students to approach problems from a critical perspective of community, context, and compassion.
Once a case has been approved by Review Counsel and the Community Outreach Counselor, CLASP also provides some basic, short-term counseling and referrals if requested. This service, highlighting the intersection of law and social work, serves to facilitate more holistic service provision that is necessary given the interlocking nature of oppressions that face many of our clients. CLASP may act as an advocate for clients in a variety of areas (such as housing, mental health, social assistance or education) and aims to promote a more just society through individual capacity building and community engagement.
