Computer Renewal Program (CRP)

What is the Computer Renewal Program?
Started in 2001, the Computer Renewal Program (CRP) is a University-wide program that ensures all full-time faculty have access to computers that will assist them with their teaching responsibilities. The computers are renewed every three years. By centralizing this initiative, York has simplified the process, and has greater leverage in negotiating vendor terms and pricing.

Am I eligible to participate in the Computer Renewal Program?
All full-time tenure stream, contractually limited appointments (CLA), special renewal contract (SRC) and seconded faculty members are eligible to participate.

What if I have a joint faculty appointment. Do I qualify for a new computer in each faculty?
Unfortunately, full-time faculty may only qualify for one computer through the CRP regardless of their joint appointment status. Providing and refreshing a second computer is at the discretion of the respective Faculty Technology Support Group. Alternatively, you may wish to purchase a second computer with your research budget.

What models of computers are available and who selects these models?
University Information Technology (UIT) negotiates with several vendors for specific models and configurations. Osgoode ITS determines which computer models best meet the needs of Osgoode faculty. Typically, these will include at least two desktop and two laptop models. To find out which computer models are currently supported by Osgoode ITS, contact the Osgoode Helpdesk by email at help@osgoode.yorku.ca. Computer models and configurations are updated at least every two months.

Who pays for the computers provided through the CRP?
CNS provides 100% funding of a standard desktop computer configuration. As models change from time to time, so does the amount provided by the CRP program.

What if I want a laptop that is more expensive. Will CNS pay for the full amount?
Funding towards a laptop is limited to the amount provided for a standard desktop. Since laptops generally cost more than the funding available, the excess cost must be paid through the faculty members research fund or PER.

When can my computer be upgraded?
Osgoode ITS will notify you when the three-year term for your existing computer is nearing completion. At that time you will also be advised of your model options, upgrades available, and the excess cost not covered by the program.

Can I purchase my old computer that is being replaced this year?
CRP desktop computers are not available for purchase. As a cost saving measure, these computers are reused in other areas of Osgoode such as the graduate carrels and are therefore not available for purchase. However, CRP laptops that are eligible for replacement this year can be purchased. The cost is based on 10% of the amount funded by UIT. This amount varies from system to system depending on the options.

Will I receive a replacement computer if mine is stolen and which insurance will cover the theft?
A computer that is removed from York property must be insured by the user. When you receive your CRP laptop you will be required to sign a York confirmation of insurance. If stolen, Osgoode ITS will provide a comparable replacement computer until a new one can be ordered and configured for your needs.
