Reference & Research Services

Full-time, professional reference librarians, specialized in law and legal research, are available to assist you in accessing the library's services and resources and finding the information you need. Please stop by the library's Reference Desk to take advantage of their assistance.

Students and faculty are advised to book appointments with reference librarians for extensive and time consuming research.

Please note that Reference Librarians will give assistance in researching legal questions but will not give legal advice, counsel or opinion.

In addition to general reference services and guidance, the Reference Librarians offer the following special services:

Passwords for Online Legal Research

All Osgoode faculty and students are entitled to personal educational passwords for the major CALR (Computer-assisted Legal Research) services (CCH Online, Lexis/Quicklaw, Westlaw Canada). There are also a number of specialized online service that require a library username and password for access. These latter requirements are always indicated in our database of eResources @ Osgoode. For any of these password-related services, please contact the Reference Desk (416-736-5207) for details and information.

Library Liaison/Advisor Services

All Osgoode faculty members are assigned a personal "Library Liaison" and graduate students are assigned a specific "Library Advisor" to assist them with accessing library services and resources and to assist them with their research.

Research Guides

The reference librarians have produced a number of research guides on specific legal topics to assist you with your research. If you have any changes or additions to suggest for these guides, or have any ideas or recommendations for additional research guides, please do not hesitate to submit your comments to the Reference Desk.
