As a potential showdown between cabinet and the backbench looms over Liberal MP Rob Oliphant’s proposed legislation prohibiting genetic discrimination, the bill received the backing of three out of four constitutional experts testifying before a committee Tuesday.

Oliphant — who has been nervous about the government’s views on the bill, which struggled to clear the Senate for years — said Tuesday it feels “one step closer.”

“I think the case for the constitutional argument was well made and the committee should have every confidence we can pass a bill that’s constitutional in its present form,” he said.
