Summer Study Abroad Programme: Experiential Learning for CUHK Law Students

The Faculty of Law of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (“CUHK”) is committed to enriching the learning experience of its students. Law students are encouraged to pursue a broad and diverse legal education and to gain exposure to different legal cultures and systems.

With this in mind, CUHK Law set up the Summer Study Abroad Programme (“SSAP”) in 2006. The SSAP offers LLB students the opportunity to broaden and enrich their understanding of other legal traditions and practice within the framework of a scheme promoted and organised by the Faculty in conjunction with law schools and legal organisations around the world.

In past years, the Faculty of Law has offered SSAP trips to Tsinghua University in Beijing and the University of Sydney in Australia. The Faculty continues to explore possible opportunities for LLB students to visit overseas higher education institutions under this Programme. This year, the Faculty introduced a new SSAP in partnership with Osgoode Hall Law School of York University in Toronto, Canada.

This summer, more than 70 LLB students had the opportunity through the SSAP to study and learn abroad for 3 weeks between June and August. The students travelled overseas as a group and were supervised by a member of the Faculty of Law. They attended lectures, seminars and tutorials provided by the host institutions and visited courts, legislative bodies, law firms and other legal institutions. The host institutions also organised cultural events and trips to give students a better understanding of the local culture. Students also had significant free time to explore the host city on their own.

To encourage and support students, who wish to participate in an SSAP, the Sir TL Yang Society, a student society organised by CUHK Law, provides each LLB student with a bursary of up to HK$10,000 to subsidise the cost.

This year CUHK Law introduced a new Summer Study Abroad Programme in partnership with Osgoode Hall Law School of York University in Toronto, Canada.

More than 40 CUHK LLB students participated in the Summer Study Abroad Programme at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China from 6 to 25 June 2016.
