The Civil Litigation Project provides law students with an intensive exposure to the practice of law and offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in civil litigation.
Project Details
Each day, two civil litigation lawyers and six law students volunteer at Law Help Ontario centers in Toronto: four students at the Superior Court of Justice location, 393 University Avenue and two students at the Small Claims Court location 47 Sheppard Ave. East.
A typical day for a law student at LHO may include the following responsibilities:
- Attending client meetings with lawyers
- Interviewing clients and helping to identify legal issues
- Researching case law
- Assisting clients at the computer kiosks
- Drafting court documents and correspondence to opposing counsel, under the guidance of a lawyer
How to Get Involved
Pro Bono Students Canada is accepting applications on behalf of Law Help Ontario. We recommend that you indicate your preferred shift time and your preferred location (Small Claims – 47 Sheppard Ave E or Superior Court – 393 University Avenue).
Placements are available for 2nd and 3rd year law students.
If you have an interest in civil litigation and an awareness for access to justice issues, we encourage you to join the Law Help Ontario team.
If you are an upper year student and wish to get involved in the Civil Litigation Project, download the application form (Word). This application is due on Wednesday, September 15th, 2010. Selected students must attend a training session on Friday, October 1, 2010 from 1:00pm to 3:30pm.
