Pro Bono Students Canada is now accepting applications for volunteers for the Wills Clinic for the 2009-2010 academic year. The Wills Clinic operates as a PBSC initiative, with intake interviews conducted at the 519 Church Community Centre. The clinic serves members of the Toronto community who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and are within a low income bracket.
Responsibilities will include client screening and intake, and the drafting and reviewing of Wills and Powers of Attorney. Students will gain hands-on experience as they track client files from initiation to closing. Please note that interested students must have credits from, or be enrolled in, either Transmission of Wealth at the University of Toronto or Wills and Estates at Osgoode Hall. Six students will be selected from the applicants to participate in this exciting new opportunity.
Selected students must attend two evenings of training at the Basman Smith office. When students are matched with a client (anticipated to be once a semester) they should be prepared to commit approximately 20 hours within the two to three week period it typically takes to take instructions, draft the will and complete the signing process.
The application deadline is Wednesday, September 15th, 2010, though early applications are encouraged. To apply or to learn more about this opportunity, please contact probono@osgoode.yorku.ca. Interested applicants are asked to forward their CVs and cover letters to Pro Bono Students Canada at Osgoode.
