Osgoode Hall Law School,

Advancing from LLM to PhD

Students admitted to the LLM who wish to obtain a PhD may apply to advance from the LLM to the PhD. This application must be supported by the student’s supervisor and the student must meet one of the following conditions:

  1. The student completes the LLM
  2. The student completes a 70-80 page extended literature review and plan for the PhD which is approved by the student’s supervisory committee. This option does not lead to the award of the LLM.
  3. The student must prepare one or two substantial articles during their time in the LLM and have them accepted for publication in scholarly journals of high repute. These articles must be accepted by the student’s supervisory committee as being of acceptable quality. If the student wishes to receive the LLM degree, this work must be defended in an oral examination.

Applications to advance to the PhD are not guaranteed to be accepted. They are reviewed at the same time, and in competition with, applications from new students.
