Osgoode Hall Law School,

Residency and Student Status

Registration

Each graduate student in the Graduate Program in Law must register in each term (fall, winter, summer) from start of the program to completion. Complete instructions for registering can be found on Faculty of Graduate Studies Registration website.

Students must register by the deadlines set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. As of June 2011, the following deadlies were set for the 2011/2012 academic year:

  Fall Term 2011: September 7, 2011
  Winter Term 2012: January 3, 2012

Students who fail to register by the Faculty of Graduate Studies’ deadlines are subject to a penalty (currently $200) if they register within a short time after those deadlines. After that, registration may only be done by a petition initiated through the Graduate Program office.

Residency

Students in the program must fulfill a residency requirement. “Residency” is defined as being physically based in the Toronto area, and being able to visit the university campus on a daily basis, such as to participate in classes, attend seminars, meet with the supervisor and study at the library.

The length of the residency requirement is:

For LLM and LLM-MRP students: 2 terms (8 months)
For PhD students: 4 terms (16 months)

Status

A full-time status student is one who regularly comes to campus to attend classes, use the facilities and/or the libraries, and be involved with graduate student events. It comprises approximately 35-40 hours of concentrated intellectual work per week. All students in the program are initially admitted as full-time students.

A part-time status student is one who comes to campus occasionally. This status is suitable for students with significant outside commitments and for those in year 2+ of an LLM or year 3+ of a PhD. It comprises approximately 10-15 hours of concentrated intellectual work per work. Part-time status must be applied for through the Program office.

An external status student is one who does not come to campus to use the facilities or receives active supervision. They do not pay tuition, but their time in external status counts toward the number of terms taken to finish their degree. External status must be applied for through the Program office.

A student may take a leave of absence for various reasons, including medical , maternity, and parenting. A student on a leave of absence does not pay tuition, and the time on the leave of absence does not count toward the number of semesters spent in the program. Leaves of absence must be applied for through the Program office.
