Osgoode Hall Law School,

Joint JD/MA-Philosophy (York)

The Juris Doctor / Master of Arts in Philosophy program provides students with the opportunity to acquire knowledge and develop skills in the related disciplines of law and philosophy. After four years of study, joint program students graduate with both a Juris Doctor from Osgoode and a Master of Arts in Philosophy (MA-Phil) from the Department of Philosophy at York.

The first and only program of its kind in Canada, the JD/MA-Phil program is ideal for students planning to pursue further post-graduate study, some areas of legal practice, or an academic career.

Students in the Joint Program spend their first year in the JD program and their second year in the Master of Arts in Philosophy program. In third and fourth year, students enrol in JD courses plus one additional philosophy course, and are required to complete a major supervised research paper on law and philosophy prior to graduating from the program. See the syllabus for program details.

Applicants to the JD/MA-Phil program must apply and be admitted to each program separately. For detailed application information, see the Osgoode and Department of Philosophy admissions pages.
