Living in Toronto

Toronto is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world and, as such, appeals to a wide variety of tastes. With a metropolitan population that is set to exceed six million people by 2012, nearly half of whom are from cultures around the world, it is truly a global city.

Toronto was recently ranked 10th on Foreign Policy magazine's Global Cities Index, which measured "the 60 cities that shape our lives most" and 13th (third in North America) on the MasterCard Worldwide Centers of Commerce (COC) Index that defined global cities as "critical links in a network that directs commerce and finance around the globe."

Toronto is the capital of Ontario, Canada’s largest province, the financial capital of Canada and the third largest financial centre in North America.  The city is rich in culinary and cultural experiences with more than 5,000 restaurants and such outstanding museums and art galleries as the Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario.  Every year, Toronto’s International Film Festival reinforces the city’s reputation as ‘Hollywood North’, and the birthplace of some of contemporary cinema’s most daring productions.

Toronto is also home to four major league sports teams: the Toronto Raptors basketball team, the Blue Jays baseball club, the Maple Leafs ice hockey team and the Toronto FC soccer club.  There’s something for everyone in this metropolitan city!

Every year, more than 130,000 students come to Canada to study.  Canadian degrees and diplomas are recognized throughout the world.  Furthermore, the idea that all citizens should take pride in their ancestry and have a sense of belonging is enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and has been an inspiration to people worldwide.

Canada’s famous bilingualism, with its two official languages, English and French, has given it a naturally open outlook and appreciation for diversity and change. Canada has repeatedly been chosen by the UN as one of the best places to live in the world.  Its high quality of living, low-cost education, universal healthcare, respect for human rights and dignity, and clean, safe and cosmopolitan cities make Canada a special place.
