#JUSTICE FOR SOLI: A Case Study on Mental Health and the Law
In December 2016, Soleiman Faqiri, a 30-year-old mentally ill man, died while on remand at the Central East Correctional Centre. His death was the result of the use of force against him by numerous prison guards. For seven long years, Soleiman’s brother, Yusuf, vigorously pursued accountability and justice. In December 2023, an inquest jury returned a verdict of homicide and made 57 recommendations for government reforms meant to prevent future similar deaths.
My Brother Soleiman tells the story of the Justice for Soli Movement, which sought accountability for one man’s death but shone a light on systemic shortfalls in criminal justice and mental health services that result in the incarceration of individuals in need of care.
The event will feature a screening of the film (1 hour), followed by a panel discussion.
