James Chaffe

Justice James R. Chaffe was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket in 2013. He was called to the Bar in 1992 and joined the firm Charlton Murphy Oliver Shields in Hamilton as a litigation associate, practising in corporate/commercial, administrative, labour and family litigation. He also developed an independent criminal defence practice. In 1993 he moved to the firm Fogler Rubinoff in Toronto. Since 1994, he has been an assistant Crown attorney, initially in Elgin and Kent Counties and since 1995, in Scarborough, prosecuting criminal matters including large and complex cases. Justice Chaffe has been a presenter at numerous professional conferences including Ontario Crown Attorneys’ Association plenary sessions and the International Association of Prosecutors in Kiev, Ukraine. He was the president of the Ontario Crown Attorneys’ Association and is the current vice-president of education for the Ontario Crown Attorneys’ Association. He was also the President of the Canadian Association of Crown Counsel. He has also been a member of the Elder Abuse Consultation Team in Toronto.
