Gerald Chan is a partner at Ruby Shiller Chan Hasan. He graduated as gold medallist from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2006 and clerked for the Honourable Rosalie Silberman Abella at the Supreme Court of Canada in 2006-2007. In 2012, he was awarded the Osgoode Alumni Gold Key in the “One-to-Watch” category and the Precedent Setter Award from Precedent Magazine.
Mr. Chan’s practice focuses on criminal, constitutional and administrative law. He has argued before every level of court in Ontario and a variety of administrative tribunals. He appears regularly in the Court of Appeal as a member of the Ontario Inmate Appeal Duty Counsel Program. And he frequently acts for interveners in the Supreme Court of Canada, where he has appeared as counsel on nine occasions.
He also publishes widely and presents regularly at conferences, including those organized by the Osgoode Professional Development Centre, Law Society of Upper Canada, Criminal Lawyers’ Association, Ontario Bar Association, and Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers. He co-authored Sentencing, 8th edition (LexisNexis, 2012) (with Clayton Ruby and Nader R. Hasan). And he is an associate editor of the Canadian Rights Reporter.
Mr. Chan sits on the Board of the Association of Chinese Canadian Lawyers of Ontario. He is also an active member of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association, where he serves on the Interventions Committee and Recent Call Committee.
