Students enrolled in the Osgoode Business Clinic (OBC) work under the supervision of lawyers at Stikeman Elliott LLP with individuals who are starting up or operating their own small businesses and who would otherwise be unable to afford legal services. The clients are referred to the OBC by a local community agency. The OBC selects clients from the agency’s referrals and provides legal services to those clients on an on-going basis from September to the end of March. The casework includes drafting contracts, employment agreements, and incorporation documents.
The OBC is staffed by upper-year students who act as Senior Caseworkers and first-year student volunteers who act as Junior Caseworkers. Senior Caseworkers train and supervise the work of the Junior Caseworkers. Senior Caseworkers participate in weekly seminars, three of which are hosted at Stikeman Elliott’s offices in downtown Toronto. Senior Caseworkers receive academic credit for their participation in the OBC.
