The Willms & Shier Environmental Law Moot is a moot court competition open to all Canadian law schools. A partnership of Osgoode Hall Law School and Willms & Shier Environmental Lawyers LLP, it is the first and only national moot court competition devoted to environmental law. Its goal is to promote awareness of the growing role of environmental issues in contemporary legal practice and public life, while enhancing law students’ written and oral advocacy skills. Unlike most moot courts, students must argue both sides of the case. The competition takes the form of an appeal before a Canadian court of last resort, bringing together law students, judges, leading lawyers, and legal academics to explore cutting- edge environmental law issues.
What You Need to Know
- This is an environmental law moot
- The moot is held every other year at the Ontario Court of Appeal; please check for dates here
- Teams argue one side of the appeal in their first match and the other side in their second
- The playoff and final matches are judged by senior appellate judges
Teams
- The team is comprised of four oralists and one researcher
- Interested students should apply through the upper year consolidated mooting tryouts
Credits/Courses
- Team members receive three graded credits for their participation, which will be applied in the Winter term
- Team members are required to enroll in the Appellate Advocacy Workshop and will receive two credits for their participation, which will be applied in the Fall term
