Reference & Research Services

Full-time, professional reference librarians, specialized in legal research, are available to assist you in accessing the library’s services and resources to find the information you need. Please visit, phone (416-736-5207) or email the library’s Reference Desk to take advantage of their assistance. Students and faculty are advised to book appointments with reference librarians for extensive and time consuming consultations.

Passwords for Online Legal Research

All Osgoode faculty and students are entitled to personal educational passwords for the major CALR (Computer-assisted Legal Research) services (CCH Online, LexisNexis/Quicklaw, WestlawNext Canada). There are also a number of specialized online services that require a Library username and password for access. These latter requirements are always indicated in our database of eResources @ Osgoode. For information about any of these password-related services, please contact the Reference Desk (416-736-5207).

Interlibrary Loans (ILL)

The Library can obtain any material required by Osgoode students that is not available at other libraries at York University and is not available from electronic sources (e-resources) at York. Interlibrary loans can only be requested and processed using RACER, York University’s online interlibrary loan service. There is no charge to Osgoode students for this service.

Loaner Laptops

Osgoode students may borrow a wireless-ready laptop computer for personal use. The normal loan period is 4 hours but all laptops must be returned half an hour before Library closing. Late returns are subject to overdue charges of $3.00 per hour or any part thereof. To borrow a laptop, please ask at the Circulation Desk.

Mooting Teams

Special, extended borrowing privileges are granted to all moot team members at Osgoode. The Mooting Director must notify the Library of the team members, after which each team member will be issued a special borrower’s card. The loan period associated with these cards is 100 days or the date of expiry of the card, whichever comes first. This loan period does not apply to Core Collection materials, for which the normal 24-hour loan period remains in effect. Each team member is responsible for any Library materials signed out to him/her and for ensuring that they are returned on time.

Research Assistants

To help them better serve the faculty for whom they are working, Research Assistants (RAs) are issued special borrowing privileges in the Osgoode Library. To obtain these privileges, you must first register with the Library.

Before submitting the application, your faculty instructor must first complete the upper portion of the application for the RA’s Library card. Further, your personal Library account must be clear of all charges, fines or penalties before the RA borrowing privileges can be extended to you.

Please contact the Circulation Desk (416-736-5206) if you have any questions.
