Stephen Moore has spent his entire career, of almost 40 years, as a litigator at the Toronto law firm of Blaney McMurtry LLP. He has been designated by the Law Society of Ontario as a certified specialist (civil litigation) since 2000. Over this time, he has represented individuals who have suffered personal injury as well as commercial clients in commercial disputes. However, the main focus of his practice has been insurance related matters including casualty defence, coverage and regulatory issues. His practice has run the gamut from defending insureds in motor vehicle accident, product liability and professional errors and omissions claims to assisting insurers in drafting new insurance products for the gig economy. Over the past 11 years he has also been a mediator and has mediated a wide variety of disputes often involving multiple parties.

Mr. Moore has appeared as lead counsel on a number of trials in the Superior Court of Justice and its predecessor courts including the longest civil trial to have been tried in the Northwest Region. He has also acted as counsel on appeals and judicial review applications before the Divisional Court and the Court of Appeal. He has appeared before a number of regulatory tribunals and represented insurers on arbitrations mandated by the Insurance Act.

Over the past twenty years Mr. Moore has been a risk management partner at his firm. In that role he is responsible for arranging the firm’s insurance, liaising with LawPro, the firm’s excess insurers and with the Law Society of Ontario. He is also responsible for assisting the firm’s lawyers in complying with their professional responsibilities under the Law Society Act and the Rules of Professional Conduct through teaching and by being available as a resource person.

Mr. Moore has written and lectured widely in his areas of specialization delivering over 50 papers for such organizations as the Law Society of Ontario, the Canadian and Ontario Bar Associations and Osgoode Professional Development.
