Faculty Service and Teaching Awards

The purpose of these awards is to provide significant recognition for excellence in teaching, to encourage its pursuit, to publicize such excellence, and to promote informed discussion of teaching and its improvement. The awards demonstrate the value Osgoode attaches to teaching.

Osgoode Hall Law School Faculty Service Awards

This award is given to a faculty member who, through leadership and commitment, have significantly enhanced the academic community at Osgoode. The purpose of these awards is to recognize the efforts of colleagues who dedicate significant time and passion to service commitments, to celebrate outstanding service contributions, and to acknowledge the indispensable role of collegial service in Osgoode’s culture and community.

The award is given to faculty based on the following factors:

  • the breadth, depth and intensity of a faculty member’s service commitments;
  • the leadership demonstrated through a faculty member’s service commitments; and
  • the impact of a faculty member’s service on improving the academic program, partnerships, and community at Osgoode.

All faculty who engage in service commitments are eligible to be nominated (apart from the current Dean, Associate Deans and Chair of Faculty Council); and the service commitments considered may include but are not limited to the various administrative roles and Faculty Council committee assignments at the Law School and the University.

Osgoode Hall Law School Teaching Awards

This award is given to a faculty member who, through innovation and commitment, have significantly enhanced the quality of learning by Osgoode JD Students. Three Teaching Awards will be presented annually, one in each of the following categories:

  • Full-Time Senior Faculty (10 years or more teaching experience)
  • Full-Time Faculty (less than 10 years teaching experience)
  • Adjunct Faculty

These awards are given to faculty who have:

Student Learning Experience

  • responds to diverse student experiences
  • fosters intellectual growth
  • challenges assumptions about the subject matter
  • supports the development of new insights
  • deepens critical thinking
  • develops specific skills

Substantive Innovation

  • draws upon current and emerging research in the subject matter
  • communicates passion for the subject matter
  • challenges disciplinary boundaries and traditional canons
  • develops new methodologies
  • nurtures the creation of new knowledge

Teaching/learning strategies

  • is sensitive to diversity and equity
  • responds to different needs and learning styles of students
  • inspires student learning
  • remains open to students’ concerns and views
  • uses creative pedagogical techniques to engage students

Professional and curriculum development

  • develops own teaching through conferences, seminars, workshops which address pedagogical issues
  • draws upon research in teaching and learning
  • contributes to the transformation of curriculum and teaching/learning practices on campus and beyond, both within and outside of classrooms

Mentoring

  • works collaboratively with colleagues to enrich teaching practices
  • nurtures the growth of students from diverse backgrounds

Ongoing excellence

  • demonstrates continuing excellence in all areas of the nominee’s teaching over a period of years
