Larry Swartz

Larry Swartz is an award-winning lawyer, a professional leader, and a financial professional. He has extensive experience with insurance, pensions, professional associations, non-profits and government. His expertise includes knowledge of governance, compliance, finance, tax, trusts, estate planning, litigation, class actions, dispute resolution, mergers and acquisitions, and marketing.

Mr. Swartz was in-house counsel for Canada’s largest firm for human resources and pension plan administration, he worked for the largest Canadian insurance company, the largest international law firm, and the world’s largest professional services firm. His experience includes work in the public sector and serving on the board of one of Canada’s largest utilities. Mr. Swartz was Senior Crown Counsel at the Ministry of the Attorney General for the Government of Ontario, responsible for public policy including pensions. His experience includes previously serving as legal counsel for an insurance association.

Mr. Swartz is the Past Chair of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) Pensions and Benefits Law Section, awarded the National Sections Council Award of Excellence from the CBA during his term as Chair. He is Past President of the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association (CCCA) Greater Toronto Chapter and a Past Chair of the Pensions and Benefits Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association (OBA). Mr. Swartz was awarded the Award of Excellence from the OBA and CCCA. He serves the CBA on National Council and the National Sections Budget Committee, he serves the OBA on Provincial Council and the Audit Committee, and he is Chair of the CCCA Professional Development Committee. He has been active in the community, including Chairing the Court of Revision for municipal tax appeals and a local Ratepayers Association.

Mr. Swartz holds the CFA designation and several other professional financial designations (including CFP and CLU). He is a Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of CFA Magazine, a past Member of the Disciplinary Review Committee of the CFA Institute, a past Chair of the Ontario Insurance Commission Advisory Board, a past Member of the Canadian Association of Pension Supervisory Authorities (CAPSA) Industry Advisory Group on Prudent Funding and Investment and a member of CAPSA’s Pension Plan Governance Industry Working Group.

Mr. Swartz has spoken at more than 40 external conferences in the last ten years, and has authored several legal publications, including a legal textbook for insurance and financial advisors. He is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School and is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada.
