Preparing for Hybrid Classes

Synchronous Classes

If you are teaching a hybrid in-person class and are connecting with remote participants, you will need to connect based on the classroom being used.

Setting up Zoom Meetings

For all scenarios, a Zoom meeting is required for participants to connect into.  See Video Conferencing for more information on setting up Zoom meetings.

Scenario 1 – HyFlex Rooms

For rooms with built-in HyFlex equipment, no additional equipment setup is required.  Follow the instructions in the room to use the equipment, and connect to the Zoom meeting room.

  • 1001 / 1003 / 1005 (Moot Court) / 2002 – Partial HyFlex: These rooms have built-in cameras, but do not have audience mics.  In-person students can connect to the Zoom session on their laptops to ask questions and participate in the chat, for the benefit of remote participants.
  • 0002 / 2001 – Full HyFlex: These rooms have built-in cameras, additional reference screens and audience microphones.

Scenario 2 – Non-HyFlex Rooms – Remote Guest Participant

A guest speaker can be brought virtually into the classroom using the built-in equipment in any classroom.

Note that in this scenario, the remote participant will not be able to see into the classroom.

Video: Connect the classroom computer to the Zoom meeting setup.  The remote participant will be broadcast to the classroom via the built-in equipment.

Audio: The remote participant will hear anything broadcast to the classroom microphone (if available in a lecture hall).

Audience Participation: In-person participants can connect to the Zoom meeting room using their laptops.  In-person participants should ensure their microphones are muted to avoid feedback issues in the room.

Scenario 3 – Non-HyFlex Rooms – Remote Participant

A guest speaker can be brought virtually into the classroom using the built-in equipment in any classroom.  Additional equipment allows the guest speaker to engage with video and audio in the class.

Video: Connect the classroom computer to the Zoom meeting setup.  The remote participant will be broadcast to the classroom via the built-in equipment.

The instructor should connect their laptop, and using either the built-in camera, or an external webcam, should connect to the meeting room.  The camera can be pointed towards the in-person participants, or the instructor as desired.

Audio: The remote participant will hear anything broadcast to the classroom microphone (if available in a lecture hall).

Audience Participation: In-person participants can connect to the Zoom meeting room using their laptops.  In-person participants should ensure their microphones are muted to avoid feedback issues in the room.

Scenario 4 – Non-HyFlex Rooms – Remote Participant Enhanced Experience

A guest speaker can be brought virtually into the classroom using the built-in equipment in any classroom.  Additional equipment allows the guest speaker to engage with video and audio in the class.

Important Note: The Meeting Owl is a self-service device that must be signed out and operated by the instructor.

See Meeting Owls for detailed instructions on planning the use of and setting up a Meeting Owl.

Video: Connect the classroom computer to the Zoom meeting setup.  The remote participant will be broadcast to the classroom via the built-in equipment.

The instructor should connect their laptop and a Meeting Owl to the meeting room.  The camera can be pointed towards the in-person participants, or the instructor as desired.

Audio: The remote participant will both listen and broadcast through the speaker built-into the Meeting Owl.

Audience Questions: In-person participants can use the Meeting Owl microphone to ask questions.
